Destruction of Native American culture was intentionally and systematically carried out by greedy opportunists, corrupt government officials, and well-meaning, but ignorant social reformers.
Back then there where many greedy opportunists. Some white marriages would adopt an orphan Indian just to get the land of the children. After the whites would get the land they would return the little Indian orphans and stay with the land of the little ones. The Indian ring was when Indian agents would steal the goods the whites gave the Indians and they would sell and keep the money for themselves. Now and days people still do that, many people see an opportunity in something and they would do it no matter what other people think.
The corrupted governmental officials where the people that worked for the government and broke the law. The white men forced the Indian males to go to boarding school. In school they were forced to cut their hair. For the Indian’s their hair was their pride. They had to go to white peoples churches, wore white men’s clothing and had to speak English. If an Indian was caught speaking in their native language they would whip them. Indian’s where not allowed to teach their children their culture or their language. One time an Indian husband was speaking to his wife in their native language; two men got him putting him in knees and started whipping him in front of his wife and kids. The poor man kept repeating “I will never forget my native language never.”
When the Dawes’ Act on 1887 Native Americans got some liberty. When the Dawes’ Act came out it said "The Indian may now become a free man; free from the thralldom of the tribe; freed from the domination of the reservation system; free to enter into the body of our citizens. This bill may therefore be considered as the Magna Carat of the Indians of our country." That’s when the Native American’s got their rights in this country. Every person should have the same rights...
