A specific phobia, from the Greek meaning flight or terror is a marked, and persistent, extreme and irrational fear of a clear and discernible object, situation or activity (APA, 2000). There are countless phobias classified into various subtypes of specific phobia. The behavioural and cognitive models of psychology both have explanatory models for this condition and empirically tested treatments derived from them. Without focussing upon an individual phobia the focus of this essay will be to explain and examine the evidence base for the respective treatments in turn and critically compare each model.  

The current diagnosis system, regardless of orientation, recognises specific phobia as a type of anxiety disorder. In this, it is explained that exposure to the phobic stimuli almost invariably provokes a reaction, which will be anxious and may take provoke a panic attack (Roth & Fonagy, 2005). The avoidance of these phobic stimuli may also interfere significantly with the individuals life (APA, 2000). This interference could be, for example a restricted lifestyle, or occupation; it may also interfere with health, if for example the avoidance behaviour was of a medical nature and is often associated with physical illness (Geiser, Kleiman, Albus, & Conrad, 2012). With specific phobias, there is also a high co-morbidity with other anxiety disorders and high lifetime prevalence of between 12.5% and low spontaneous remission (Kessler Rc et al., 2005). There are four subtypes: (a) natural environment type (e.g. storms or heights), (b) situational type (e.g. crossing bridges, or entering elevators), (c) blood-injection-injury type (e.g. needles), and (c) other type, (where the stimuli is none of the above).
