When Roméo Dallaire was first assigned to UN's UNAMIR mission in Central Africa, the French Canadian force commander knew almost nothing at all about Rwanda and its then-dire situation -- unfortunately, he was not the only one who didn't. The world had never heard of Rwanda, the tiny country with a booming population squashed in between the better-known nations of Kenya and The Congo. If one were to ask any Canadian on the street in the year 1993 whether or not they had ever heard of Rwanda, the likeliest response would have been a look of confusion, or a simple "no". The fact of the matter was that nobody cared about a small nation nestled next to the great lakes of Africa, especially not twenty years ago; not entirely unexpected, giving the sheer number of African nations that anybody would be hard-pressed to name completely. The part of it all that was the most concerning, however,   was that not even the people who should have known -- the people who should have cared, and could have held the fate of Rwanda in their hands -- were some of those who cared the least about what was about to unfold there. The chilling phrase "there is nothing in Rwanda, only people" is a reminder of how callous those who have devoted their lives to the wellbeing of the world can truly become when they see nothing to gain from helping others, and when there is always an inconvenience leading them astray.
