Abnormal behavior is described as a behavior that is disturbing, disruptive or behavior that stems from distorted thoughts.   It can also be described as behavior that is different from what is acceptable from society. Abnormal behavior is studied with two different types of behaviors: adaptive and maladaptive. There are four perspectives on abnormal behavior: psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive and social-cultural. On average people tend to know what is and what is not acceptable behavior to society, but there are those that have a mental illness or some aspect of their behavior deviates from the norm. There are many abnormal behaviors that affect adults and children all over the world. Statics state that in the US in 2012, any mental illness (AMI) affected 43.7 million adults nationwide.   There are many abnormal illnesses that are diagnosed and many adults and children can live life as normal as can be with the treatment they are given.  
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) reports mental illnesses are common in the United States. (NIMH, 2013)National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) obtains all statistics reported on NIMH, and NSDUH states that define any mental illness (AMI) as a mental, emotional or behavioral disorder that can range in many forms. (NIMH, 2013)When these illnesses are severely disabling they are known as a serious mental illness. In 2012, an estimated 9.6 million adults in the United States and it represents 4.1 percent of all adults. (NIMH, 2013)Serious mental illness is a disorder that interrupts major life activities in everyday functions.   Abnormal behavior affects adults and children alike.   In 2008, 13.4 percent of adults sought out treatment for the mental illness that was affecting their lives. Breaking that down more, in 2008, of those suffering with major depression only 71 percent went and received service and treatment to help with their disorder.
