Adoption and homosexuality are two controversial social issues: what if they were combined as to allow homosexual couples to adopt a child? Is it healthy for the children to be adopted by same-sex couples while they were born from both a mother and a father? Recent open-mindedness concerning homosexuality has led to giving them more rights including that of marriage. However, this has engendered a slippery slope where couples started to approve the desire of wanting children as well. On one side, some think that adoption by homosexual couples does not affect the adopted children’s sexual orientation. Furthermore, the issue of not having both a mother and a father is an adjustable one. On an opposing side, others reflect that regardless of this advance in homosexual rights, adoption by homosexual couples damages the children: they will have higher chances of being homosexual themselves which could lead them to being victims of homophobia, and to being attained with psychological disorders. Throughout this explanatory synthesis, different sources including books, online databases and websites related to the pros and cons of this issue will be exposed and compared in terms of their credibility and accuracy.
On a first side, agonists claim that the parents’ sexuality has no influence on that of the child. In fact, the child’s sexual identity forms independently of that of the parents whether they be homosexual or heterosexual. For instance, in the entitled Debate: Gay adoption article (2011) it is said that according to American Psychological Association “Research has shown that the adjustment, development, and psychological well-being of children is unrelated to parental sexual orientation and that the children of lesbian and gay parents are as likely as those of heterosexual parents to flourish”(p. 4).
