Alexander the Great was born in Macedonia in 356 B.C. His parents were King Phillip and Queen Olympias. To say the least, young Alexander matured early. Aristotle and Leonidas were Alexander’s first mentors. Aristotle gave Alexander a thorough training in rhetoric and literature and stimulated his interest in science, medicine, and philosophy. Leonidas, on the other hand, was a strict disciplinarian who instilled in Alexander his Spartan nature which became famous during his Persian and Indian expeditions, where he would live simply, very much like his troops. After King Phillip was assassinated, Alexander took over and ascended to the Macedonian throne. At age 17, Alexander experienced his first combat when he led troops alongside his father against the united forces of Athens and Thebes, who were rising against Macedonia. The young general fought valiantly resulting to a victory which made Athens and Thebes become part of the Macedonian nation.
In 334 B.C., Alexander decided to travel to Persia but went first to the ancient site of try to visit the tomb of Achilles. He took Achilles’ shield from the gravesite, which he kept with him during all his travels. One of Alexander’s goals is to seek revenge on the Persians for their invasion of Greece. Soon enough, the Macedonian army encountered the Persian army under King Darius. He fought his way up the steep riverbank to meet the Persians, who were defeated in an aggressive hand-to-hand combat. Alexander proceeded to march south and free Greece from the rule of Persians. The Egyptians made him their new pharaoh and hailed him as an immortal. Here, Alexander built a city and named it after himself. Alexandria soon became one of the most prosperous cities in Egypt. For the second time, Alexander met Darius in battle. Though the Persians outnumbered the Macedonians, the latter still won. Darius escaped but he was soon found by Alexander in the middle of the dessert already dead.
