Many critics argue that Chris vies with Joe for the position of the tragic hero in the play ‘All My Sons’ by Arthur Miller. Tragic hero is a great or virtuous character in a dramatic tragedy that is destined for downfall, suffering, or defeat.
The two characters Joe Keller and Chris Keller are blood relatives, father and son. Joe Keller is a man nearing sixty, a businessman who owns a factory. He made the mistake of letting a colleague ship out twenty one damaged P-40 airplane cylinders into war. For which his colleague had to pay the consequences. Chris Keller is thirty-two; he works for his father in his factory (we don’t know what he does) and will soon takeover. He is the second son of the Keller family, the first, Larry, was lost at war but Chris made it back from war unscathed. He is in love with the sweetheart of his brother, Ann, and has decided on marrying her.
Many people believe that Joe is the tragic hero of the play. This is due to the fact that when he is confronted by his son, about the truth of the cracked cylinders incident he chooses to deny the fact and try and get Chris to believe him. This is when Chris questions Joe and Joe replies with “how could I kill anybody?”   “I didn’t kill anybody!” These quotes tell us that Joe does not want to admit the truth to his son. This may be because he is ashamed or because he does not want his son to think inappropriately of him. The main words in these quotes are ‘I’. This is because Joe Keller is trying to remind his son, who he is talking to and to get Chris to understand that he could not do anything of the sort. The effect of the audience at this point of the pay is that they are considerate but disappointed with Joe. They are sympathetic because at end the person that Joe tried to hide this secret from found out. But they are disappointed because even after his son found out he still lies and tries to deny the fact. This makes the audience think that Joe is the tragic hero of the play, because, his...
