In the early 1630's John Winthrop was convinced the Lord wanted to show His glory in this new nation. He wrote, "For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill, the eyes of all people are upon us; so that if we shall deal falsely with God… and so cause Him to withdraw His present help from us," (Winthrop). As this nation was considered a gift, it was the people’s mission to develop and prosper in America as a way to thank God. The people flourished in three categories: building a structured government, having economic freedom, and social freedom. Having an organized supremacy ensures all else will work properly, while economic freedom allows for people to have many opportunities to succeed, and lastly social freedom gives everyone the opportunity to express their cultures. (Add a brief description on the three points) The United States therefore is a “City Upon a Hill” because it serves as a role model to other nations -- who long such traits.
A nation, to be considered a “City Upon a Hill”, should have an organized government as the set foundation for the country; moreover, a system where little corruption occurs. In the United States, the government system is broken down into national, state, and local levels. This means that due to the work being spread out less corruption is bound to happen -- through a system of checks and balances the branches look over the work of others for civility. John F. Kennedy stated, “Today, the eyes of all people are truly upon us -- and our governments, in every branch, at every level... must be as a city upon a hill, constructed and inhabited by men aware of their great trust and their great responsibilities” (Kennedy). In brief, an organized regime offers the security and trust a nation needs to work properly.
Following a systematic government comes the economy, a “City Upon a Hill” should be a nation where people are given economic freedom to prosper and not feel attached to a social class but are able to...
