“Living Life on the Dole” by Michael Grunwald is a story told from a point of view that most Americans do not see. In this story, the author takes many of the simple things that Americans use every day such as water and electricity and he gives the breakdown of how much of the money that we pay goes into that resource and how much the government subsidizes. He mentions in his story “Most Americans think of the water that comes out of our faucets as an entitlement, not a handout, but it’s a government service, and it’s often subsidized.” (Grunwald 32) That is just one of the subsidies American’s receive to help them “live life on the dole” as Grunwald puts it.
“The Evaluation of Nickel and Dimed” by Jane Kim is an evaluation of Barbara Ehrenreich’s experience of living as a low-wage worker and trying to survive on the little bit of money she makes. She struggles to make it paycheck to paycheck and has to visit food pantries in order to barely make it through each month.   Ehrenreich “opens reader’s eyes to the hardship of those who make the lives of others more comfortable at the expense of their own well-being.” (Kim 150)
Americans should be responsible for their own success. They should work and pay their own way in society. If a person is not working then they should be in some type of training program trying to better their life. When a person is working, the taxes that are paid by them go towards things that pave the way to our success for example; the taxes paid every time you pump gas into your car goes towards maintaining the roads so that you can get to work. The taxes are paid so that businesses can get their product to the stores, and so companies can deliver their products to other companies. Without the roads, people would not be able to get to work and businesses would go out of business.
