America Poem Essay
The poem that best fits my outlook on America would be Indian Singing in the Twentieth Century America Written by Gail Tremblay. The grounds of why I thought this was the best fitting poem to my thinking is, I very strongly believe that the Indians were treated wrongly; being removed from your dwelling unjustly is pitiful and makes me understand what America is truly about.
As I interpreted the poem I could visualize the days when Indians were being moved off of their territory into small living quarters identified as reservations. I can vividly make out the confused expressions overcoming their usual smiles as they could not quite determine the phenomena taking place around them. “We stumble into the streets patterns of wires invented by strangers between the eye and sky.” (Line 5, Tremblay). This quote not only displays how quickly the Indians lifestyle changed, it also shows the viewers that the Indians were not simply uninformed; they were utterly clueless of what was occurring. Thinking back on this quote, think about how many times we question the position of power lines or even a telephone pole… not very frequently do we have to question that kind of thing; items such as electric lines are very common for us today as American citizens. In contrast, these Indians had no scheme of what electrical lines and telephone poles are or had any kind of recollection.
When you hear the expression America, the majority of people think about several good things like; authority, leadership, wealth, strength, religious freedom and several other excellent descriptions. But no one ever reflects about the bad things that could describe America like; brutality, destructiveness, anger, bitterness and the list goes on and on. What people don’t comprehend is that America isn’t the happy go lucky country everyone makes it out to be. “We go to jobs, the boss always watching the clock to see that we’re on time.” (Line 27, Tremblay).
