Introduction

The relationship between reading and writing is like that of the chicken and egg. Which came first is not as important as the fact that without one the other cannot exist. A child’s literacy development is dependent on this interconnection between reading and writing. In the 80's, some scholars had considered reading and writing as similar cognitive processes in which readers/authors interact with the texts. For example, Tierney and Pearson (1983) believed that "at the heart of understanding the reading/writing connection one must begin to view reading and writing as essentially similar processes of meaning construction" (p. 568). Basically put reading affects writing and writing affects reading. The writing style, vocabulary and the choice of topic in writing clearly reflects the type and amount of reading material the students are exposed. Lancia (1997) shows how children, ‘spontaneously borrow ideas temporarily as they develop their own writing craft’ (p.471). Revolving on the axis of reading and writing in this essay I have tried to analyse the connection between the study of literature and the development of writing skills. Some of the complexities as well as the effectiveness of the topic will also be discussed with reference to three literary texts.

Definition of literature

Before exploring the topic it is first necessary to know that what we mean by literature.
Moody (1987) writes that literature springs from our in born love of telling a story, of arranging words in pleasing patterns, of expressing in words some special aspects of our human experience.
