The Phone Call

I was at work, February 7, 2015, when I received a phone call that would change my life in ways that I had never dreamed possible.   It was one of the worst days of my life and it has shown me that I can get through anything, with time and determination.   I may not be perfect yet, but I have survived.
The phone rang, my co-worker answered it and handed the phone to me. To my regret, it was my neighbor calling me, to tell me that my home was on fire and that my mom and my dog had made it out, but it didn’t look good for our home. In complete horror, I tried calling my mom, but due to all of the sounds from the firetrucks and people there, I could barely hear her.   I left work, tears streaming down my face and in total disbelief of what I had just been told.   I prayed all the way home, that I would wake up and this would be a nightmare.
As I pulled onto my street, I could see firetrucks everywhere. We lived in the last house on the street and I had to park my car and get out and get to it.   I stood in horror, as I watched everything that I had known and owned burning to the ground.   I felt sick! I found my mom and my dog, but I couldn’t stay there. I kept saying to myself, “No, wake up!” But it wasn’t a nightmare, it was reality and now what was I going to do? I have nothing; no clothes, no bedroom, no home, nothing. I was completely devastated.
The Red Cross stepped in to help for three nights and from then on, we had to try to stay with family members until we could come up with enough money to rent an apartment. This was a very hard time for me because of my concern for my dog, having to work, having to spend money that we were trying to save so that I could have clothes for work. I felt as though, I was just going through the motions each day, I didn’t feel connected or as though it was even real.   I think that was my way only way of coping with all of the changes going on.   Going from having everything that I still had from childhood to...
