Mark Twain once said, “Honesty is the best policy -- when there is money in it”. A little bit of sarcasm and a hint of irony in this statement made it plausible to understand as to why King Leopold II of Belgium claimed to imperialize Congo. During the years of “scrambled for Africa”, many dominant European nations raced each other to get as many African nations as they possibly could. Hence, who ever had the most colonies would be recognized as the most dominant nation. Countries such as England and France had multitude colonies in Africa, but they were owned by their government.   On the other hand, Leopold II owned Congo by himself -- no government was involved. The most unfortunate events in Congo occurred during his foreign intervention was how he treated the natives. The ruthlessness of the Europeans, the tortures of the officers, the art of intense brutality and the unfathomable sufferings of the villagers imposed by Leopold II is perhaps the bedrock of the architecture of Adam Hochschild’s primary objection. Hochschild’s King Leopold’s Ghost: A story of greed, terror and heroism in colonial Africa, established a plethora of factual and ethical principles through individuals’ experiences and struggles witnessing King’s attributions towards the natives that question intricacies of moral justification.  
Leopold II’s so called “humanitarian effort” and dissatisfaction toward “Arab” slave traders made him look prominent and a role model from his outside character, but from the inside he was a brutal ruler. One of the primary factors that led him to imperialize Congo dealt with the idea of empire building in the 19th century in the race for Africa. Another factor was the notion of Europeans’ superiority against other races. In several chapters, it became crystal clear that he wasn’t the man of his word; instead, he was a fierce culprit who took advantage over the natives in the name of humanitarian efforts.
