Analyzing Psychological Disorders


As a psychologist, it is important to understand that there are many factors that can influence a person psychologically, which include biological makeup as well as developmental, behavioral, and environmental factors and conditions. Many psychological disorders can be attributed to more than one of these factors. Understanding how these factors play a role in the development of certain disorders is important and necessary in finding successful therapies for coping with and overcoming many psychological disorders. I will conclude my interview process with the information you requested in regards to the causes and treatments of schizophrenia, as well as the case study information on Tom who is suffering from anxiety, and Mary who is suffering from insomnia.
Schizophrenia is a psychological disorder that has been associated with madness, and can be severe enough to affect all aspects of a person’s life including the way they think, behave, respond, socialize, and their ability to care for themselves (Pinel, 2014). A person suffering from schizophrenia may experience symptoms such as jumbled or mixed speech, delusions and hallucinations, hear voices in their head, display odd and inappropriate behavior, or display catatonic tendencies. They may also be overly paranoid and believe that someone or something is controlling them, trying to harm them, or plotting against them, and can make it extremely difficult if not impossible to socialize, hold a job, or lead any aspect of a normal life (Pinel, 2011). The symptoms for this disease can vary significantly, change throughout the progression of, and overlap with symptoms for other psychological disorders which can make diagnosis difficult. It is also common for those suffering from schizophrenia to suffer from a secondary or co-morbid psychological disorder (Schizophrenia, 2011).
