The concept that we are all born with fixed rights, such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, is fundamental to our society. I find it to be an injustice that humanity thoughtlessly demeans this principle by denying that animals share these rights. Animals are just as entitled to the rights of living, avoiding pain, and pursuing happiness as humans are. Yet some still exploit and abuse them brutally, most often without a second thought. Vivisection, or the use of animals for medical research, dissection, and testing deprives animals of their natural rights and is a great injustice in our society. I believe that this is completely unacceptable, and we should find more humane as well as more effective alternatives without delay.
Despite the wide use of animal testing, the research received from it is not even of much help to us. The make-ups and medicines we test on animals react differently on every species; for example a make-up product tested on a lizard could make its skin blister and peel while on another animal like a pig it can have no visual effect. In fact, it has been proven that no two species even react to any given drug in the same way. Results achieved from animal testing can be incorrect and misleading. Sometimes not only are the results wrong, but the opposite is true for humans, a drug may cure a disease in lab animals but have an conflicting effect when used in treating people with similar symptoms.
Vivisection reduces sentient beings to the status of tools, to be used for the benefit of others and disposed of. Animal testing is also incomprehensibly cruel, which cannot be justified by the results gained through its use, no matter how valuable. Since there is no real gain from harming defenseless animals then why should we have the right to deprive them of their natural born freedoms? There is no excuse to allow the cruelty that testers emplace on animals in our society.
Research is not the only wrong doing imposed upon...
