2012 AP United States History Summer Assignment
Rationale: The summer assignment provides students the opportunity to survey the colonial & founding periods of American history (17th and 18th centuries). Approximately 10-15% of the AP exam administered in May will be based on this time period. This assignment, which is divided into two parts, is given over the summer to expose you to the type of reading and writing work we will be completing this year and to help guarantee that our AP history classes will be able to spend the necessary amount of time needed in studying post-colonial history.
Purchases: You will need to purchase two items for this assignment (the AMSCO book will also be used all of next year and is a very necessary part of class).
1. Founding Brothers by Joseph J. Ellis (ISBN # 0-375-70524-4). I found it at amazon.com for prices of $4.00 (used) to $10.20 (new). It will also be available at any library.
2. United States History: Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination by John J. Newman and John M. Schmalbach (ISBN #9781567656602). It is available new through AMSCO School Publications, Inc. (website below) for about $18 but can be bought used for as little as $4 at other websites. I ALSO HAVE A VERY LIMITED NUMBER OF USED COPIES AVAILABLE FOR $8 EACH—first come, first serve.
Due Date: The due date for the summer assignment is the first day of school (August 21, 2012). Please make a copy of your colonial assignment (AMSCO work) as you will need it for class discussion after you’ve handed in your work for a grade on August 21.
Point Value: This summer assignment is worth approximately 20% of your first quarter grade. Students who do not complete the assignment by the due date should seriously consider dropping the class as they are forfeiting 20% of the first quarter grade. NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT....
