Throughout history, unexpected circumstances have turned a series of events into an opportune time for disaster.  Historical greats, including Alexander, Ivan the Terrible, and disputably, Adolf Hitler, have faced incredible differences in their decision paths.  It is not reasonable to think that everything will always go as desired, thus adversity is always present.  With adversity, circumstances must be analyzed and overcame in order to eventually reach an ultimate goal, no matter the destination.  When an individual is placed into a situation in which adversity must be dealt with, it is often found that a person will do things he or she never thought would have been possible.  Possibly the outcome of a rush of adrenaline?--Or panic?  No matter the cause of these tasks being dealt with, the essential idea that adversity helps accomplish amazing tasks goes without debate.  People in adverse situations confront us daily.  We read about them in literature, see them in the news, and walk by them on the streets.  The great cyclist Lance Armstrong and the Joad's from John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, are people who had undergone adversity that had elicited talents from them.

    Lance Armstrong was a great young cyclist until 1996 when he reached the age of 25.  At that time, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer that had spread though other organs of his body.  After being diagnosed, he realized the odds were against his survival.  After two years of intense treatments, Lance began serious training to return to the sport he loved.  He was soon back in tip-top shape and back on the road.  The 1999 Tour de France sparked optimism in young Lance.  He led the overall time for most of the Tour, but many said he had still yet to prove himself.  From 1999-2005, Lance competed against the greatest cyclists in the world and won the Tour de France in each of those years.  Without the death-defying encounter with cancer Lance may never have gotten himself into the best...
