The family is what some people see as normal for most people to be a part of. The nuclear family is a two generation family group consisting of a father and mother and their children who are either biologically theirs or adopted and who share living quarters. Many families are also extended ‘horizontally’ or ‘vertically’ meaning they have an extended family, in which may include grandparents or aunts and uncles. There are several people who disagree with this term of a ‘normal’ family and see the family in a different way. Feminists are some of the main people who criticise this definition of the family due to several reasons. Most feminist see the definition as non beneficial towards woman and that there is gender inequality in the family. Males are often seen as the ‘head of the family’ as they earn the most and are seen to make the more monumental decisions when it comes to money and large purchases like houses. Conjunctional roles are the roles played by the male and female within a family. Segregated roles are where the male is the breadwinner and the woman is the home maker with their leisure time spent separately. Whereas joint roles is where the husband a wife each perform both role and spend their leisure time together. There are several different feminist views or perspectives but they focus on 5 main subjects: women’s lives, the role of the housewife, the relationship between men and women, socialisation and the negative side of the family but just because they focus on this does not mean they all have the view on them. Power relationships can change the role of women depending on how much power they hold within the family. Power relationships can mean that women are ‘ruled’ by men and are made to lead a life that mainly reflects what the male wants them to do i.e. reproduce and look after the children.
