‘Assess the political achievements of the O’Connell agitations and what were their long-term consequences’

The following essay is an assessment of the political achievements of the Daniel O’Connell’s agitations and to examine the long term consequences of these achievements. The essay will be split into two main parts, the first of these parts will be made up of an assessment of O’Connell’s political achievements in which each achievement will be mentioned and assessed one by one. This will consist of his main political achievements such as the rousing of the whole Irish nation by setting up of the Catholic association in 1823 and Catholic rent in 1824, his major victory in the 1828 election in county Clare, leading to the subsequent granting of Catholic Emancipation by Peel and Wellington in 1829, his attempt for Repeal of the ‘Act of Union’ between Ireland and Great Britain together with his efforts in land reform, though ultimately a failure they did secure some minor reforms for Ireland which can be seen as little achievements even if it was not the desired achievement and finally his non violent non militant approaches. The second part of the essay will delve into the long term consequences of the above achievements where long term consequences can be seen. This will be done by examining each achievement and stating the long term consequences that can be seen in each and to whom these affected, for example Catholics, Protestants, Ireland, Great Britain, Europe and the wider world.

To begin the assessment of O’Connell’s political achievements with that which most would regard his finest and probably his most important achievement of all, as it paved the way for every achievement thereafter, this was his rousing of the Irish masses.
