The essay “Atonement” is a story about a young girl who catches her sister in a passionate embrace with a childhood friend; her jealousy drives her to tell a lie that will irrevocably change the course of all their lives forever.
Briony finished typing her play and she went to show it to her mother. Then went to see her cousins to rehearse the play with the twin boys, Jackson, Pierre, and Lola. The twin boys left the room to go swimming and Lola left the room also. Briony was sitting there and she heard a buzzing noise. It was a bee by the window. She went to let it out. She looked out the window; saw her sister Cecelia and Robbie, her childhood friend, out by the fountain. Cecelia hopped out of the fountain half naked and soaking wet, while Robbie stood there looking at her. Briony thought there was something going on between them and Briony called Robbie a sex maniac.
Robbie was writing Cecelia a letter and after he finished the letter he gets ready to go to dinner at Cecelia’s house. Before he gets there he sees Briony and calls her over and asks her if she would not mind handing the letter to Cecelia and she said, “Yes”. Briony runs home with the letter and gets to the house and opens the letter and she was shocked to find what it said. She went to give it to Cecelia and went to her room to get ready for dinner. When Briony came down for dinner she found one of Cecelia’s hair pins on the floor. As she picks it up, she hears something in the library Briony walks into the library and finds her sister Cecelia having sex with Robbie. She calls out Cecelia’s name and they both stopped what they are doing and walked out of the room saying nothing.
