Autism. The newest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) brought changes that created additional clarity and also distinct caveats in the realm of Autism Spectrum Disorder. “The revised diagnosis represents a new, more accurate, and medically and scientifically useful way of diagnosing individuals with autism-related disorders (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).” This new revision allows for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to be diagnosed into four separate disorders, including autistic disorder, Asperger’s disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder or persuasive development disorder. This allows for health care providers to offer a more specific approach for the best possible patient benefit and results.
As my topic for discussion, I chose the movie Rain Man. This popular, 1988 film was the world’s first main stream, Hollywood-budgeted depiction of a condition that influences such a large number. The main character, portrayed by Dustin Hoffman, was extremely well-done because of the sensitivity placed within the role he was challenged to deliver. Hoffman takes into account the most-notable symptoms and tendencies of someone with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Noted in the movie, was his excellent representation of the emotional stressors, personality and speech patterns that are typically observed in people with Autism. Hoffman spent around a year building relationships with Autistic men and their families to understand the complexities of their interactions. Raymond, Hoffman’s character, sheds tremendous light on a condition that, according to the American Psychiatric Association in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, affects an estimated 1 in 68 children. This movie was an important action step for widespread awareness and may have led to increased funding, research and resources for those with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
