Once upon a time there was a prince who wanted to marry a princess, but she had to be a real princess. So he travelled around the world to find one. There were many princesses, but he was never sure whether they truly were real princesses. There was always something not quite right about them. At last he returned home very unhappy because he could not find what he was looking for.
One evening there was a terrible storm with thunder and lightning, and rain pouring down in torrents. It was dreadful! Suddenly, there was a loud knocking at the castle door and the queen hurried to open it.
There on the doorstep stood a beautiful woman but what a sight! She was drenched with water running down from her hair and her clothes. The queen answered the door and she was in shock of what she seen. She couldn’t believe that this woman was actually a princess; she definitely didn’t look like it. However, she said nothing and went to prepare a bedroom for the unexpected guest. The queen stripped all the bedding off and placed a pea on the base of the bed. Then she took twenty mattresses and laid them on the pea, after which she then laid twenty eiderdown quilts on top of that.
After the beautiful young lady got all settled in she finally met the prince. As soon as the prince laid his eyes on her, he knew she was the one. They sat around the fire and drank tea. He got to know her more and more and in his mind she was amazing. His mother kept trying to tell him that she wasn’t a princess and that he was wasting his time. For some reason, the prince didn’t care. He felt something special about this girl and he wanted to spend more time with her. They talked until she was practically falling asleep, then he led her to her room. He didn’t know what his mother had planned and at this point; he didn’t care.
The next morning the prince and queen asked her how she had slept.
