Behind the mind of an addict


Addicts are not just physically addicted but psychology addicted. The relationship between mental illness and drug addiction is very common and becomes comorbidity. Addiction is argued to be a mental illness. Drug addiction is a chronic disease. Addiction and dependency on drugs was viewed as an ethical issue but as medical information and technology increases we learn the facts about addiction.

Behind the mind of an addict
When people become addicts it might be beyond their control. Why is it that addicts do what they do? It might not be just because drugs are addictive. Drugs produce physiological and psychological dependence. Addiction is a controlling factor to the extent that even while trying to overcome the addiction it is still reasonable to the addict to exercise the destructive behavior.
What makes people try drugs in the first place? There are many reasons, ranging from perceived pleasure of the experience itself, to the escape that a drug-induced high affords from the everyday pressures of life, to an attempt to achieve a religious or spiritual state. However, other factors having little to do with the nature of the experience itself, also lead people to try drugs (Feldman, 2009).
Why do some become addicted and others do not? There are many reasons such as biology, environment, and development. The genes that people are born with in combination with environmental influences account for about half their addiction vulnerability. Additionally, gender ethnicity, and the presence of others mental disorders may influence risk for drug abuse and addiction. A person’s environment includes many different influences, from family and friends to socioeconomic status and quality of life in general. Genetic and environmental factors interact with critical developmental stages in a person’s life to affect addiction vulnerability.
