Black Boy

Although immature during his childhood years, through many trials and tribulations Richard Wright soon grew up to a mature young adult who soon able to support himself and eventually his family. Coming from a broken family, Wright was constantly forced to fend for himself through hunger and family issues that continuously unstable his personal life. Richard’s life is a great example of the development of character throughout the book. Beginning from his childhood, he was afraid and naive of what was occurring around him. As years passed by, he began understanding his role in his family and must grow up to provide for family. The small child that is depicted in the beginning is a whole new person from the seventeen year old at the end, but there is a certain aspect of his mentality, which stays throughout. No matter at what age, he is a rebel.

      During his childhood, his father was a colossal figure in his life. The brutal nature of his father scared him into childhood rebellion. This starts his journey to maturity and then slowly slips away from the reach of his father.   In once instance Richard's father tells him to kill his kitten. Richard knows that his father didn’t really mean it but still committed the deadly deed to outsmart him, “I had my first triumph over my father. I had made him believe that I had taken his words literally. He could not punish me now without risking his authority. I was happy because i had at least found a way to throw my criticism of him into his face,” (Wright 24).   When he realizes that he had killed the kitten in cold blood, he is frightened even though this act was a way to strike back. This act, though seemingly mature, was simply a childish rage to express his bottled up feelings. Even still he cannot fully comprehend his own emotion, “I stumbled out into the black night, sobbing, my legs wobbly from fear, Though I knew that I had killed the kitten, my mother’s words had made me it live again in my mind,”...
