Multicultural/Diversity Aspects of Empowerment Counseling
Devon Brown is a young boy who is raised by his grandmother. Mother is constantly in and out of jail. Father has never been in the picture. Although it appears that he would like to have a bonding relationship with his mother; he manages to cope without her total presence. Devon’s current support system consists of his grandmother and pastor.
Adlerian Therapy focuses on the emphasis and social interaction of the client. Adlerian counselors use the following techniques; establishing a therapeutic relationship with client by attending and listening with empathy. Exploring the psychological dynamics operating in the client-assessment by getting a better understanding of the client’s lifestyle. This would include family constellation and childhood memories. Encouraging development of self-understanding and helping the client to recognize the motivations that are present in client’s life. And lastly, helping the client to make new choices by reorientation & reeducation. Adlerian counselors encourage clients to define themselves within their social environment. Adlerians teach, guide, provide information, and offer encouragement to clients who are discouraged. Adlerian therapy can be applied to both individual and family
In Conclusion, the goals of adlerian therapy is to challenge and help identify and change their mistakes about themselves, people, or lifestyle.
Devon Brown is most likely to succeed with the support of his family. He is encouraged by his grandmother as well as the reverend that he idolizes dearly. Devon dreams are to become a pastor one day.
