The Bus Rapid Transit System in Cebu City

Transportation is a vital factor that must be considered in a highly industrialized city, like Cebu City. If there are changes that will be made with the transportation system in the city then it will also have a great impact in the economic stability of the city, whether it will increase or decrease. The Cebu City Government has proposed a new Transportation System which they call as the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRT). The advocacy of the BRT System was started by Cebu City South District Congressman Tomas Osmeña when he was still mayor of the city and it was based on the success story of the BRT System in Bogota, Colombia. The project proponents hope to start its implementation in October of 2013 and will become operational by 2015. The core part of the BRT system is the segregated BRT line which will run across the city. This route will run from Bulacao to Ayala Mall via Cebu South Road, Osmeña Boulevard and N. Escario Street. It will link the key destinations of Ayala Mall, Capitol, Central Cebu and include a link to the future SRP development. With the implementation of the BRT System in Cebu City I believe that the traffic condition in Cebu City will be reduced. The city will surely have a fast paced traffic system that will attract investors.
Before it will be implemented I propose two major recommendations that the government should consider in order for the city to be economically stable and for the project to be successful. First, the government must create livelihood programs that will serve as alternative ways to earn for the PUJ drivers who will lose work due to the implementation of the BRT System. Second, there must be a representative from other sectors that supports the completion of the BRT system to oversee on how the project is implemented in order to avoid...
