The above case study highlights many of the risk factors associated with
Myocardial Infarction (and other cardiovascular diseases). Your
Assignment is to write an essay discussing these risk factors and how
they lead to the development of cardiovascular disease like MI.
Cardiovascular Disease is a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels. It is the number one cause of death in Ireland and in other Eastern Countries.
This disease is cause by the hardening of the arteries (Atherosclerosis). This happens when there is a build up of fat in the arteries and form plaque. This plaque enlarges over a period of time which makes the arteries stiffer and therefore makes it more difficult for blood to pass through. Fats (Lipids) may be formed and block blood flow, causing myocardial infarction and other disease.
The blockage starves tissues of blood and oxygen, which can result in damage or tissue death (necrosis), contributing to a common cause of heart attack and stroke. If a clot moves into an artery in the lungs, it can cause a pulmonary embolism (sudden blockage).
• The symptoms (signs) that a patient has myocardial infarction are a crushing central chest pain radiating up into the left jaw and down the left arm.
• The patient will have the same pain sitting down as well as standing up when they have myocardial infarction, unlike angina.
So what are the risk factors for atherosclerosis?
There are many risk factors such as poor diet, high cholesterol, and obesity, lack of exercise, poor hygiene and high stress that cause atherosclerosis. In the case of KM, there were six factors that influenced atherosclerosis.
Here are the risks sorted into Modifiable (where you have control to change yourself) and Non-Modifiable (where you don’t have control to change yourself)
• Age: Most powerful independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease; risk of stroke doubles...
