Critique of Carmen
The opera I watched is Carmen (2010, In Metropolitan Opera). It was one of the most famous operas through the world. It was written by Georges Bizet (1838-1875). The story is between a passionate Romany girl Carmen and a frank solider Don Jose. He abandoned the peaceful life with his kind fiancée Michaela, and then fell in love with the attractive girl Carmen. But finally, their different experience and consciousness leaded to a tragedy: Jose killed Carmen and the end of love.
Carmen was acted by Elina Garanca, a famous mezzo-soprano singer. I think her performance in Carmen was remarkable. Her voice is unique and sounds like that she has a wide and thick throat. So she made the sound smooth and glossy. Her beautiful voice not only made Carmen charming and attractive, but also wild and strong. I very appreciate her breathe. Her breathe is soft and regular. Beside the Garance’s singing skill, her performance in this opera is excellent. She devoted herself in this show and made the character Carmen quite vivid. We can feel her sorrows, joys and her enthusiastic personality. But we also can feel the tragic fate of Carmen and her love.
Don Jose is acted by Brandon Jovanovich. He is a tenor singer. I think his performance was also brilliant. His voice is steady and not too strong. Sometimes, it’s soft and slow. We can see his struggle through his singing. Jose’s peaceful life was ruined by Carmen. He abandoned his lovely fiancée and normal moral rules to fall in love with Carmen. When Carmen changed her mind to love the other man, we can hear the anger and the sadness through Brandon’s performance. But I think his voice was not too...
