Ethical Dilemma regarding job switching
The Case evolved around personal dilemma of Cynthia Martinez, an employee of Altrue when she gets an attractive job offer from Altrue’s main competitor Crytex Systems. Most of the case is based on the conversation between Cynthia and her husband Tom after she gets the job offer. Cynthia was very enthusiastic and looking forward to the job opportunity but when Tom asked about the current project on which she is working the initial excitement begin to fade. She was the key member in the project and Tom remarked that her departure could result in project failure and would let her team members down, so, he suggested that she should think about it and try to do what is right. Though she responded that she does not owe Altrue anything and everything would be alright but the conversation made her wonder should she reconsider.
1. What should Cynthia do? What ideals, obligations, and effects should she take into account when making her decision?
Cynthia should re-consider her decision to shift to Crytex Systems. The best possible option would have been complete the current project at Altrue and then move out to Crytex but this doesn’t seem possible in the given scenario. Even if it’s true that she does not owe Altrue anything she should reconsider the possible effects like the possibility of project collapse as she is the key member of the team or the possibility of degrading relation with long time colleagues. It’s probably true that in a business world everything is business where the main driving force is profit but it’s the personal values and integrity that holds everything together. If any undesired result happen in Altrue resulting from Cynthia’s departure, probably she could not be directly held responsible for the mishap but she may feel personal guilt later on which may affect both her personal and professional life.
