The purpose of this lab was to learn and practice the methods to determine the volume and density of a substance. We used materials such as unknown liquids, thread,graduated cylinders,distilled water and other irregularly shaped solids. Density is an important part of chemistry, it helps identify the identity of a substance. By the time we were done with this lab, I understood the importance of density and how to find it.
For finding the density of liquids at room temperature, we had to measure the mass of a dry & clean 10-mL graduated cylinder. We had to add some amount of distilled water to the cylinder and record the volume of distilled water. Then, we measure and write down the combined mass of the cylinder and water. The previous steps had to be down again for two unknown liquids. The “part B” steps for irregularly shaped solids, we had to find the mass of an irregularly shaped solid by same arm balance. We then added some water to the empty graduated cylinder and wrote down the volume. We had to do these steps as well for an unknown solid.

It's necessary to indicate temperature when giving density values of liquids because at higher temperatures, substances will expand, and at lower temperatures, they'll contract. Besides density, another characteristic property is magnetism. Some other characteristic properties are color,size,texture,hardness and softness.
