Childhood Obesity in America
Childhood obesity has been a rising problem in the United States. The problem has grown considerably in the last years. Being so easy to recognize but so hard to treat, childhood obesity is a significant problem in America. Obesity is confirmed when the child’s weight is ten percent higher than what is considered normal for their height and body type (Collins, 1998).
When finding the cause of obesity, genetics, behavior, biological, and cultural factors all are included. There are medical factors that could lead to obesity, which are not likely. Poor eating habits, overeating, the lack of exercise, medication, low self-esteem, stress, and depression are a few examples of causes of obesity. Many children aren’t in control of what they eat and drink. Parents are to blame for that.
This specific problem is significant for many reasons. Being obese isn’t healthy, especially in children. It can cause a number of problems. Some of those problems found are: high blood pressure, diabetes, higher heart disease risk, breathing problems and trouble sleeping. Children with obesity problems have more self-esteem issues than adults. The reasons why will be included in the final paper.
Obesity can be managed and treated if really cared about. This is important because if people put in the time and energy, childhood obesity can decrease. Many examples of how to manage obesity in children were found: change the child’s eating habits, consume less calories
and controlling food portions, limit snacking, and make better food selections, meaning eat healthier.
