Article Analysis: Children and Poverty
Children and poverty is on the rise in the United States. The facts are that there are millions of children in America living in poverty today. One out of six children is living in poverty today. (Children’s Defense Fund, 2008) Many of those children come from one income if not no income families.
The recession has caused the biggest effects on poverty in children. The numbers continue to rise year after year. We went from 18 percent in 2007 to 22 percent in 2010. (Isaacs, 2011) It is hard with cuts in the economy hitting everywhere for these to be anything but significant changes. The government is making cutbacks and the effects are hard felt throughout America. Some states are being hit harder than others are when it comes to the cutbacks and the way the economy is. While state revenues are increasing, the funds that are available to families are decreasing. Jobs are being taken out from under us without question. Private businesses have to close because the funds are not there for them to remain afloat. While government-spending increases, the little people fall further into poverty.
The numbers can be shocking at how many people today are out of work. The numbers indicate that nearly 9 percent or more of the population throughout America is unemployed. It does not matter because one particular occupation is not showing less people working than other occupations. The children of these families out of work are struggling with many issues, which are affecting their families. Families struggle to keep a roof over their heads, food on the table and giving them the bare necessities to live. It makes it tough on the children in so many different ways. The child who does not have the proper amounts of food to eat can be affected with lack of nourishment. While we would not think twice about an adult lacking nourishment a child not getting the nourishment to survive or succeed it something that makes it tough to handle....
