Another area that we chose to look at was the chronology of crimes and how the events during the 18th century affected how black people were treated in London. The first area of interest when looking at the sources available to us, specifically the Old Bailey online, was the crime wave that occurred in the latter half of the century. After 1750 there were 29815 crimes recorded, over ten thousand more than the first half of the century. When looking more deeply into why it happened, we looked at the events that were happening during this time that could affect crime figures. The primary event that could cause this were the Gordon Riots of 1780, in which protests on Parliament and attacks on property lead to increased numbers in recorded crime. With regard to black crime committed, out of the thirty one cases available, twenty three were recorded after 1750. This was due to the increased black population that had arrived in Britain as slaves from American plantations or loyalists that fought for Britain against America however they were put into a situation where they were poor poverty was strife. Both Norton and Sherwood establish this. ‘The American refugees arriving in Britain after the war almost uniformly turned to the government for assistance to relieve their financial distress.’ While Sherwood   states ‘For them the city was an unsavory, unsanitary and grossly overcrowded place…’ These subpar living conditions coupled with the increased exposure to shops displaying exotic goods inevitably lead to acts of desperation, as the stats show twenty nine of the thirty one crimes committed by blacks were thefts. It also shows the impact Americans had by inhabiting parts of London, however I don’t think their presence within the city lead to discrimination against blacks, in regards to the whole demographic.
