One of the most important personalities of the twentieth century was Gabrielle Chanel.
She was born on 19 August, 1883. Gabrielle was a second daughter of an unmarried couple.
She lost her mother when she was twelve years old. Unfortunately, one week after her
mother’s death father abandoned Gabrielle and other children. They were left in the
orphanage to be raised by nuns. How could this girl with sordid, tormented childhood think
about her future? However, the dream about being a successful businesswoman in the future
never went out of her mind. Gabrielle relentlessly worked to realize this dream. Thanks to her
persistence and self-confidence Gabrielle Chanel overcame all the obstacles and became one
of the greatest figures in business of the twentieth century. I was impressed by her insistence
and self-belief in her life, especially in business.
Gabrielle Chanel was inexperienced in business; however, she never lost her wish about
being a successful businesswoman. She began her career as a dancer and singer. By
mischance, this attempt did not bring her any luck. The only one benefit she got from that was
her nickname “Coco” which became famous in the future. Fortunately, luck found her.
Gabrielle met Arthur Capel who was known among his friends as “Boy”. First, she hesitated to
borrow money from him, but, knowing that she did not have any other chances to be in
business, she asked him to lend her money to open a shop. At the beginning he was surprised
because at that time he could not imagine a woman in business. Despite of his thoughts, he
liked her persistence, and that was why he lent her the amount of money she wanted.
Coco opened her first shop in Paris in 1910. It was a hat shop. Her customers were very rich
women. It explains why her business was successful. Inspired by this success, she again
asked Boy to lend her more money to open the second shop in Deauville ( the French seaside...
