Cognitive Development Essay
    Over the years, psychologists and educators have developed various theories about the way in which children learn.   This paper shows the learning theories of Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky, how they compare and contrast and shows ways these theories may be used in the classroom. The two have some very similar themes such as challenging the student, readiness of the student and the social interaction of the student.   While they maybe similar each has their own interpation of the ideas on what works the best.
3 Important Points from Piaget and Vygotsky
Piaget: (Piaget, 1953)
1. Sensorimotor stage- Based primarily on behaviors and perceptions which are mainly observed in the young ages where the infant’s behavior is completely reflexive.   The child doesn’t really respond to his environment as much as react to it.
2. Preoperational stage-At this stage the child is entirely self-centered and it is at this point that his thought process differs most from those of adults.
3. Concrete operations-This stage the child is able to perform mental operations, and understands the concept of one object standing from another.
Vygotsky: (Vygotsky, 1978)
1. Developments begin at a social level than a child moves to objects and events and seem more individualized.
2. Language is the most important tool for the child's development.
3. Learning as a tool that helps drive the child's development.
The constructivist approach brought forth by both Piaget and Vygotsky would tend to fit well in the traditional classroom.   The teachers using either one of these approaches would see the children for one year then promote them to the next grade level.   Since both men believed that children’s learning takes place most readily during social interactions.   This approach lends to more teacher center classrooms in which lectures are given while children sit and listen.
