• What are the advantages of having diversity in a collaborative learning environment?
Having diversity in collaboration allows for different talents using different sets of skills working together for a common goal. Talking and brain storming ideas with other in individuals can often lead to a better intake of information and increased critical thinking skills. I have read that many companies and organizations find creativity and problem solving are increased as each individual thinks operates and solves issues differently. Learning to collaborate with people of varied backgrounds, cultures, ethnic groups and with varied ideals is crucial as a college student, as we prepare to enter the professional workforce. The world we live in becomes more diverse by the moment; sects that once were minority are becoming the majority as cultures and ethnicity meld in this vast melting pot our world is becoming.
• How might factors such as diversity, attitude, learning, and work styles affect collaboration?
Collaboration can be effected by many factors, as we see in our online classroom. Each student is diverse by nature; we are all like snowflakes different and unique. I have a different learning style work style and attitude than everyone else. As well my fellow students have these same attributes. When working together we may find that Sally is better at note taking, Tom is a critical listener and Bob prefers hands on activities. With each set of skills being varied we can produce a more complex and rounded conclusion or thesis in a project or even discussion questions. Having diversity in ethnics and life style can also lend a hand in a firm conclusion. If Sally is from a mostly Latino inner city and Tom is from a less diverse Caucasian gated community she might be able to enlighten him through collaboration about...
