What is meant by the statement, “an inhospitable desert has become a playground, and the Colorado River has become a plumbing system.” The meaning of this statement is that the vast desert land that is normal a type of environment that is inhospitable to humans, is now a thriving area contain cotton, alfalfa, fruits and more. Due to the human population ever expanding year by year the Colorado River has been he made over and over again to meet the demands of this every changing and ever expanding human population. We humans have turned the river into nothing more than a new plumbing system to take its water to areas it never would have gone naturally. This has allowed us the ability to erect homes and playgrounds in a desert environment normally unsuitable for human life.
The primary problem that the Colorado River Task Force has come to realize is that the current usage of the Colorado River is not sustainable. The existing plumbing system that the river has become is vulnerable to natural evens, like a sustained drought or earthquakes as well as engineering failure. They have found that seismic activity is stronger in the westernmost segment of the area and occasional in other sections. This seismic activity has increase in magnitude since 1991, another side effect of the seismic activity is that he engineering errors that may occur due to improper planning.
The California 4.4 plan is set up to help reduce seepage and to slake the thirst of the cities in southern California. The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is attempting to accomplish this by investing $150 million for water conservation; this includes lining of the trunk canals. The lining of the All American and Coachella canals to stop seepage is a way to solve this problem a little bit but it will also cause Mexico to experience more destruction to its own wetlands.   California is planning on having a growth of 50 million within 30 years so even this saving of 64,000 acre-feet will...
