Unit Title: Communication and professional relationships
With children, young people and adults
Working in an educational environment gives you the opportunity to develop communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults. To raise your awareness of these areas:
Describe how to establish respectful, professional relationships with children and young people. What aspects of communication do you think would be really vital? Please state a minimum of three points.
The most important aspect of communication is to be a good listener and to use language that is appropriate to the age and stage of the child/young person.
Be conscious to show interest through correct levels of eye contact and use of body language.
It is also important to let the child/young person/teacher or parent to respond to the conversation to show them that their contribution is valued this will build self-confidence in communication with others.
Describe with examples how to behave appropriately for a child or young person’s stage of development.
First it is important to understand that all children are at different stages of development, and they will need varying levels of help and support. Do not tower over a child, as this can be very intimidating, get down to their level.
You may also need to remind them to take turns to speak and not to talk over other people and to listen.
As they get older they will be used to the formalities of conversations
Describe how to deal with disagreements between children and young people. What strategies would you use?
