How many times have you seen the sticker “We back the blue” and automatically think policeman. But a career in the Criminal Justice field is much more than just a career as a Police Officer. You can choose from a Crime Scene Investigator to a Field FBI agent. There are so many avenues that can be pursed with a degree in Criminal Justice. There are many shows that can open up our interest where we can choose a career in Criminal Justice. Many of us many not know all the details a job as a Homicide Detective or a FBI Special Agent entails. And we get our ideas from watching television. I know that I didn’t know many of the details and requirements needed to become a Police Officer or Detective. But not all careers in Criminal Justice carry a badge and fight crime on the streets. You have Probation Officers that not only keep a close eye on offenders but can also link them to certain resources in the community that can help them better their lives and the lives of their families. There are many different avenues that can be pursued with a Criminal Justice degree.
There are many different areas in the Criminal Justice field that a detective can pursue. One of the areas that interest me is the Sexual Crimes Detective. This detective needs to set aside their personal feelings when dealing with victims, especially young victims. Many times when young children have been violated they have their innocence robbed of them. The detective must also take that into consideration. Becoming a detective is not a job you apply for and get. You must first become a police officer and from there take the written exam. In other words you “must pay your dues”.   Another plus for a Detective is having a background in psychology. Which I think should also be somewhat of a requirement to become a detective. It better help the detective help the victims. Many of the victims that a detective will encounter will need someone that can understand and empathize with the victim.
