UNDERSTANDING LANGUAGE USAGE: AN AFRICAN CULTURAL PERSPECTIVE AFL1501
I have an African friend and she told me a little about the relationship terms used in her culture. The Ndebele people are situated in Mpumalanga Province. They are ruled by kings and are divided in to two tribes and they are called the Manala and the Manzunza tribes.
Manzunza – these Ndebeles believe in bringing the modern ways of living into their culture in order to make their lives better and easyer. But at the same time they do not forget about their cumstoms. The Manzunza king is well educated and the Manala king is not educated.
Manala – these people are very traditional and believe that they can mix the modern ways with their cultural ways of doing things. When they have celebration ceremonies, they have this ceremony at a place called Kwamjekejeke.
CULTURAL RITUALS OF THE NDEBELE’S
Before the Ndebele girls become a women they must do Iqunde initiation, and the boys they go engomeni into the mountains and the boys must go to a specific mountain, this mountain must be close to a river. Then there are people that bring them food, but the only people allowed to bring them food are the people who have already been to this mountain for the same ritual. And the people that bring them food are not allowed to stay and watch the initiation.
When they come back from this initiation school they slaughter a cow and they receive gifts and they will dance and sing the whole night. During this ceremony they will also talk to the aunt sisters asking them for their blessings and thanking them for their achievements.
When an Ndebele person dies, they bury them with dignity. The family will prepare a cooked meal for the community who will come in large numbers after they have buried him in the cemetery.
