The quote is trying to say that you can control how you act no matter what happens to you. One book that goes along with this quote is The Great Gatsby. In The Great Gatsby many things are out of a man’s control, but the characters still choose how to act. The novel is told from Nick Caraway’s point of view. Nick glorifies Gatsby as he is telling the story, and that makes us believe that Gatsby is truly great. But no matter how great Gatsby is, he can’t control what happens.
In The Great Gatsby the characters each react to things in different ways. There are many times when circumstances are out of control, and the characters all act in different manners. Gatsby tries his hardest to win back the love of his life, Daisy Buchanan though he has not seen her for many years. He chose to continue to love her and no matter what the circumstances, to always want her. Because he chose to do this he ends up losing his life. No matter what the circumstances, Gatsby chose to love Daisy, and ended up paying the ultimate price.
The book is set in the 1920’s. A time where morals aren’t relevant and alcohol is illegal. Many circumstances are out of the characters hands because of the time period. Gatsby and Daisy are in love before Gatsby was shipped off to war, but because of the time they are in Daisy has to marry another man. Daisy is too rich and can’t wait for a poor man to come back from war, even if she wanted too. Jay Gatsby in turn acquires a mass amount of wealth and tries to win her back. But she can’t get a divorce from her husband because of the time they are in. He chose to try to make her love him, and ended up dying for it.
