How do cultural dynamics impact collaboration?
In the Interview with American Indian Community Practitioners the Native American community of individuals were very influenced by the society around them. Their names and religious beliefs were changed by the society they live and the want to fit in to a particular group of individuals. Betty Laverdure states, “It is very hard being a traditional person because you become isolated form others.” Understanding the importance of respecting elders and living as a community is very important to the Native Americans and their tribes. Although some European ways have become prevalent in their lives some of the traditional ways are still in place with in their community.
What are the cultural dynamics at play?
The respect for the elderly, and the grandmothers being held to a high standard. The maternal society help a strong leadership, until the male dominate Catholic beliefs took place. The Native American culture still holds many of their traditional ways of celebration and community, but here are many changes that have taken place in both interviewees’ culture and tribe which is important to understand when working with this group of individuals.
How will you use the information to better understand working with American Indian communities?
The information can be used to better understand why an individual believes the way they do to acts a certain way. Understanding their beliefs and what is important when working to help them with what resources will be most beneficial to them.
