In the past I was a supporter of the death penalty but after researching the topic and learning about the costs involved to put someone on death row, botch executions, and executing innocent people my views about the death penalty have changed.   In The State of Missouri v. Emmitt Foster case, Emmitt Foster and Michael Phillips went to a residence where friend Travis Walker and a woman by the name of De Ann Keys were staying.   Phillips ransacked the apartment and before both men left they shot Walker and Keys.   Walker was found dead but Keys survived and was able to identify Emmitt Foster (S.Mays, 2008) as the shooter.   In the shooting death of Travis Walker, Foster was charged with capital murder and sentenced to death on May 3, 1995 by lethal injection.   The chamber went black seven minutes after the lethal injection process began.   Brad Farrell stated, "I could see that he was still breathing, Foster was gasping, slightly convulsing when the blinds were drawn." (Farrell, 2004).   According to the Missouri Department of Corrections, from the time a prisoner’s arms and legs are bound to the gurney to the time the inmate is pronounced dead should only take an average of fifteen minutes.   Twenty-nine minutes after the first chemical entered his veins Washington County corner William Gum pronounced Foster dead.   One of the leather straps was too tight and obstructing his blood flow and it wasn’t until twenty minutes after the chemicals were first released into his veins prison workers loosened the strap (Gay, 2004).   This man suffered during his death because of human error.   Many other people are dying horrible deaths because of human error and I believe this botched execution, just like many others, are examples of cruel and unusual punishment.   Foster may have committed a horrible crime, but I would rather see him spend life in prison without the possibility of parole than be put to death.   What makes it okay for us to kill another human being?   Why are prison...
