Capital Punishment: Justice or Sinners?
In 2004, the United States ranked fourth in the world in death sentences carried out with a total of 59. In a poll in 2006, 71 percent of Americans approved of the death penalty for various crimes, while 65 percent thought the death penalty was “not immoral”(Issitt).   50 percent of Americans, when asked if they would rather have the convicted felon serve a life sentence, still insisted that the death penalty be carried out. However, another 46 percent said they would rather the murderer serve a life sentence (Issitt). Capital punishment, also known as the death penalty, relates as far back as King Hammurabi’s Code in the 18th century BC (“Intro. To Death“). If a person was convicted of any of his 25 codified laws, the result was punishment by death. The first recorded death by capital punishment was during the year of 1608. Captain George Kendall was executed for being a spy for Spain in a colony of Virginia. Laws were later adopted for punishment by death, some being as unusual as stealing grapes(“Intro. To Death“). Many people today believe that the death penalty should be carried out to help society become healthy. Past religions enforced the death penalty, so should the societies of today. Besides, it is cheaper to kill someone right away than leave them on death row. Also, since the government is sending its own troops over to the middle east to kill what they believe is a threat to their society, then the government should kill those that mean harm to this nation here as well.
In the past, nations or cultures carried out the death penalty, claiming an “eye for an eye” type theory. It has been documented in numerous books, such as the Bible. In the Old Testament of the Bible, death as a form of punishment was enforced. In Genesis 9:6, the Bible states, "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in His own image"(Dulles).
