Defining Race and Ethnicity

Race is a classification system used to categorize humans into large and distinct populations or groups by inherited traits, physical characteristics, geographic ancestry, physical appearance, and ethnicity.   Racial groups in the United States include Whites, African Americans, Native Americans, Alaskan Indians, Asians, Chinese, Filipinos, Asian Indians, Vietnamese, Koreans, and Japanese Americans.   Ethnicity refers to groups of people whose members identify with each other through common heritage, language, culture, religion, or ancestry.   Ethnic groups in the United States include Germans, Irish, English, Italians, Pokes, French, Jews, Hispanics or Latinos, Mexican Americans, Central and South Americans, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans among others.   Race and ethnicity are important in the United States because they help to identify the countries roots as a culture and as a free nation.
