Informative Speech Outline
Purpose: To provide the audience with a better understanding of depression.
Attention Material: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), An estimated 1 in 10 U.S adults suffer from this disease. It affects many American’s on different levels. It can become debilitating and in some cases is a matter of life or death.
Relevance: I have suffered from this personally. It started while I was in high school after a series of unfortunate events.
Purpose statement: Today I am going to talk about depression.
Preview: I am going to talk about what depression is, the causes of this disease, the symptoms, and finally how to cope with depression and treatment.
I. What is depression?
A. Depression is more than just a sad feeling. Some people describe depression as living in a “black hole”, feeling lifeless, empty, and see no hope. They may feel life is not worth living anymore.
B. According to Merriam-Webster online dictionary, depression is defined as a state of feeling sad : dejection (2) : a psychoneurotic or psychotic disorder marked especially by sadness, inactivity, difficulty in thinking and concentration, and sometimes suicidal tendencies
(Transition) Now that I have told you about what depression is, I will tell you about the main causes of depression.
II. What are the main causes of depression?
