Your five senses are usually what you depend on to go on with your daily activities. They allow you to be more confident in what you see, hear, feel, taste, or smell, and it is rare for people to doubt their senses. However, it is important to know that not everything you believe to have seen, heard, or felt, is true. There are times where you may have thought you have seen or heard something but nonetheless ended by simply being your wild imagination. For example, you are home alone and are very much afraid; you hear something and move your head quickly to see what it was, and you believe to have seen somebody run in the corner of your eye. In reality, it was simply your hair which threw itself back after you quickly jerked your head. This sort of incident happens fairly often. In Rupert Sheldrake's book entitled Seven Experiments That Could Change the World, he claims that people have the ability to sense others staring at them from the back of their heads. On the other hand however, David F. Marks and John Colwell encounter a different approach to Sheldrake's theory in The Psychic Staring Effect: An Artifact of Pseudo Randomization and find themselves skeptical. One last skeptic that will be considered is Rupert Baker in his response to Rupert Sheldrake's idea on detective staring entitled Can We Tell When Someone Is Staring at Us? In this essay you will see how Rupert Sheldrake's claim is merely paranormal. The following paragraphs will consider the way the human body works, typical human nature, and the results from many different people's experiments regarding the nature of staring.
