Dieting Controversy
Our society considers fat people, both overweight and obese individuals, to be unhealthy and at a greater risk of having an early death. Personally, I do not understand why they are even looked down upon. I believe Paul Campos’ thesis statement is that the actual number of a person’s weight does not determine if the person is fat; rather it is the person’s lifestyle and daily routines that effect their life span and health. One topic sentence I chose is concerning the “body mass index” (BMI), this is a number determined by calculating an individual’s weight divided by his or her height.   BMI has nothing to do with the fat content. It doesn’t actually measure the percentage of body fat it gives an unsupported label of obesity.   I looked at the BMI as a method to control my own weight. Also there are healthcare providers who continually tell patients to lose weight based on high BMI, which makes them at risk for serious medical conditions. Many people believe having a lower BMI means that you will live longer. However, statistically speaking this has not been proven and I would have to agree. “As the Wall Street Journal pointed out last July, taking the BMI charts seriously requires concluding that Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Michael Jordan and all ‘overweight,’ and that Sylvester Stallone and baseball star Sammy Sosa are ‘obese’” (4). They are celebrities who have never been considered overweight to the general public. “Unfortunately, in the world of obesity research these sorts of theoretical and practical complications are often dealt with by simple ignoring them. The most cited studies purporting to demonstrate that fat is a major health risk almost invariably make little or no attempt to control for what medical researchers refer to as ‘confounding variables’” (6).
The second topic sentence I selected states people taking diet drugs end up weighing more than their initial weight.   Campos focuses on the studies that prove this theory....
