Difference Between Essay And Article
An essay can be defined in various ways. One it can be defined as a piece of writing from an author’s personal view point. It can consist several elements, including: observations of daily life, research works, political manifestos, and reflections of the author.
Another definition is a, “short literary composition on a particular theme or subject, usually in prose and generally analytic, speculative, or interpretative. ”
The word essay derives from the French infinitive essayer, "to try" or "to attempt". In English essay first meant "a trial" or "an attempt", and this is still an alternative meaning .The Frenchman Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592) was the first author to describe his work as essays; he used the term to characterize these as "attempts" to put his thoughts into writing, and his essays grew out of his commonplacing.
Examples of essay include: narration, description, exposition, and argument. Each type has a unique purpose: some tell a story, some are descriptive and others prevent viewpoints.
On the other hand, an article is a written composition in prose, usually nonfiction, on a specific topic, forming an independent part of a book or other publication, as a newspaper or magazine.
Examples of articles include: articles concerning geography, politics, history, cultures or different literature works.
The other difference between the two is that, except that an essay usually develops some form of argument and therefore begins with an introduction, has a number of intermediary paragraphs in which the argument is developed and then arrives at a conclusion which is set out in the final paragraph.
