With reference to what you have learnt about City Road,outline how material things
contribute towards differences on a street which you know.
The street i'm going to talk about is called Staveley Road in Wolverhampton
in the West Midlands.It is a busy road that leads into the town centre,it has a mixture of shops and houses,two public houses a large playing field and a childrens playpark.it also has a mosque and a church.It has a diverse multiracial community and this is reflected in the range of shops and the people that use them.There is competition for space from both people and traffic and it's these differences which im going to talk about.
Differences are produced in the making of society, made by peoples relation to eachother,things and their environment.[Blakeley et al., 2009,p.18]
Many people use Staveley Road at different times for different reasons.People use it to access a large asda store,the city centre,the university and campuses and molineux football stadium.There is a continuous battle for space from both people and traffic.As we saw in the Material Lives dvd, City Road has crossing points at various places to enable people to cross the road,[`material lives`, 2009 scene 1] this is similar to Staveley Road in that it too has material objects in which people engage with to make crossing the road easier and safer,but at the same time different in that on staveley road there are raised tarmac humps as opposed to crossing points, which force the traffic to reduce speed enabling people to cross the road in a safer manner.
There are many buildings on Staveley Road both commercial and residential.There are shops where you can buy everyday groceries,newsagents,a betting shop and a barbers.There are different fast food shops selling chicken and kebabs and also a fish and chip shop.All these places of consumption are run by different people from different ethnic backgrounds ranging from polish to asian through to kurdish and iraqi,this is similar to...
